Salok's Story

When Salok joined the SPARK program in August 2024, his eyes brimmed with curiosity and an eagerness to learn. But beneath that enthusiasm lay a quiet struggle—his ability to express himself through words was limited. His Parent Partner, Shannon, quickly noticed that he often communicated by pointing at objects rather than speaking. It was clear that words felt just out of reach, and expressing his thoughts verbally was a challenge. Determined to support his growth, Shannon made a commitment: she would not only teach, but also build a strong connection with Salok.

Parent Cafe Style

When SS, a 28-year-old mother of three, joined a Parent Café hosted by the Early Childhood Resource Center in collaboration with the Autism Society of Greater Akron (ASGA), it marked the first time she truly felt seen—validated and understood on a level she hadn’t experienced before. Surrounded by parents who intimately recognized the exhaustion, the struggles, the boundless love, the frustrations, and the persistent hope that come with her journey, she found deep, authentic connection.

Repetition Awakens the SPARK:
Riley's Story

When Riley first joined our SPARK program at our newest replication site, Springfield, she faced several challenges. She struggled to hold a marker, couldn’t identify letters, and was unable to write her name. Riley also showed signs of echolalia—repeating back exactly what was said to her, rather than initiating her own responses. But from the very beginning, Riley’s Parent Partner saw her potential. Each visit followed a consistent routine, which Riley quickly grew to love.

At the time, he was just beginning to find his voice—his speech was still developing, and focusing during lessons was a challenge. Makinzee Writes a New Chapter

When ECRC staff member Randy first met Makinzee, she was newly released from prison and facing the overwhelming task of starting over. A single mother with a fierce love for her children, she was in the middle of a custody battle with the state for her 4-year-old son. The odds were stacked against her, but Makinzee carried herself with a quiet strength that refused to be ignored.

Wayne's Story

During one of our Iron Clad Dad meetings, something profound happened for participant Wayne. As the group opened up about fatherhood, vulnerability, and the courage it takes to repair what’s been broken, Wayne felt moved to reach out to his oldest son—a son he hadn’t spoken to in quite some time. Just a few hours after the meeting, Wayne sent a message sharing the heartfelt letter he had written. It was honest, raw, and full of the love he had struggled to express. That letter became the first step toward healing a relationship that had been silent for far too long.

The story begins when a SPARK Parent Partner met Sara and her daughter, Brooke. From the very first visit, Sara and Brooke were warm, welcoming, and eager to collaborate. They frequently discussed challenges and solutions, and Sara consistently applied the suggested learning strategies at home. Her dedication showed—Brooke’s progress was steady, joyful, and impressive. Each visit felt like a celebration of growth.
